It was recently reported that production on The Kelly Clarkson Show will be moving from Los Angeles to New York City next season. Clarkson has since confirmed that it was her idea to make the move, and she also shared why the change was so important to her.

Kelly Clarkson Shares Why She Chose to Move Her Talk Show

During an interview with Nancy O’Dell for TalkShopLive, Clarkson opened up about her decision to relocate to the East Coast after four seasons in California. The host said she informed her staff about the move back in January.

“I talked to them because I was like, ‘Guys, I need you to know what’s happening. It’s either I’m not going to be able to continue the show or I gotta go East Coast,” Clarkson shared, according to Deadline. “Covid, pointed out [that] being isolated and so far from your family… that’s not good for anyone. And my family is East Coast, they’re North Carolina based. So it was one of those things where I just had to… and also there was a lot of personal things going on, too.”

Clarkson added that she believed her kids “really needed a fresh start,” which was difficult due to “hurdle after hurdle with things.” The singer shares two children with her ex-husband Brandon Blackstock. The couple settled their divorce last year.

According to Clarkson, the move to New York was “100 percent my idea.” She said it was “really cool that NBC backed me.” Clarkson apparently told the network, “I gotta make a change for me and my family.”

Clarkson Is Also Interested in Pursuing Broadway

In addition to Clarkson’s desire to be closer to her family, she also hinted that Broadway was another reason she wanted to move to New York. The singer loves theater and shared that she would love “to do anything related to that.”

Last year, Clarkson told Variety that she has “dreams of maybe Broadway one day,” adding, “I’ve been putting it out into the universe since I was a kid.”

In the meantime, Clarkson is gearing up to release her new album Chemistry on June 23. The singer will be performing a Las Vegas residency at Planet Hollywood’s Bakkt Theater from July 28 to August 19.

Unfortunately, fans won’t get to see Clarkson as a coach on The Voice for Season 24 later this year, as the singer is taking another season off. It’s not clear yet if her move to New York will affect her future on the talent show.
