Bella Thorne now has two films that she’d set to direct in 2024.
Fresh off the recent announcement that she would make her feature directorial debut with “Color Your Hurt,” the actress-turned-filmmaker will next be getting behind the camera for “Ash Beneath the Current.”
The film is slated to go into production this summer after Thorne completes post-production on “Color Your Hurt.”
Based on a story by Thorne that she adapted alongside Leaf Lieber, “Ash Beneath the Current” will be shot at Tuscany Film Studios in Italy, the new facility opened by Andrea Iervolino. Iervolino will produce with Jen Gatien (“Chelsea on the Rocks,” “Jack & Diane”) and Mark Emms (“Bad Vegan: Fame. Fraud. Fugitive”) serving as executive producers.

“Ash Beneath the Current” tells the story of a young woman who, after a decade of being away, embarks on a poignant trip back home for her beloved sister’s funeral only to find herself stranded on a cove that completely isolates her from any signs of life. She will have to survive the perilous journey exploring depths of grief, family and the power of the human spirit.

“I’m beyond thrilled to have already the opportunity to be stepping into the director’s chair once again, especially for a project as emotionally rich and visually captivating as ‘Ash Beneath the Current,'” said Thorne. “As an avid horror fan I wrote the screenplay from my heart incorporating some of the family, trauma and tragedy in my own life. I’m ready to dive deep into this journey and bring it to life on screen.”
To prepare herself in the director’s chair, Thorne recently wrote and directed two short films: “Unsettled,” currently in post-production, and “Paint Her Red,” which premiered at the 2023 Taormina Film Festival.
“Bella’s discovery was a remarkable moment for me,” said Iervolino. “While I had long admired her acting talent, it was her short film showcased at the Taormina Film Festival that truly revealed her prowess as a director. Witnessing her multifaceted skillset, I knew I had to collaborate with Bella. ‘Ash Beneath the Current’ marks the inception of what I believe will be a prolific partnership, with numerous exceptional projects on the horizon. Providing my innovative studios in Italy for this venture fills me with immense joy, as I anticipate an extraordinary journey ahead.”
Thorne is represented by CAA, Thirty Three Management and Hirsch Wallerstein Hayum Matlof and Fishman.
